Interview on the AI Co-Validator

Innovation meets responsibility

Safety reports are the backbone of effective safety management in aviation. However, what happens when there are tens or hundreds of these reports every day? When people have to spend hours classifying, prioritizing, and reviewing them—under time pressure and with limited resources?

Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND) tackled this challenge and, together with Comply365 (formerly ASQS), delivered a technological solution: the AI Co-Validator. An AI solution that is not only efficient but also trustworthy. Because despite all the progress that has been made, safety must remain the top priority in the company. In this interview, Nevena Akmadžić, Strategy Manager at Comply365, and the LHIND experts Amir Farajollahzadeh, Business Director Aviation Commerce, and Theresa Tran, Business Manager AI & Data Analytics, explain what SafetyManager365 (formerly iQSMS) and the AI Co-Validator are and what advantages they offer in the processing and validation of safety reports.

As a Lufthansa subsidiary, LHIND has always had high standards of quality, reliability, and safety in its DNA. How does this heritage affect your work?

Amir: Safety is not an option for us, but a basic requirement. Our thinking is characterized by precision, reliability, and a deep understanding of what is at stake. Whether it's flights, data, or processes, safety always comes first for us. We take this attitude with us into every industry, every customer, every project. And it is the basis for innovation with substance – as in the case of the AI Co-Validator.

Theresa: Security and reliable processes are essential for companies in the aviation industry. Structured risk management, global monitoring, and predictive maintenance help to anticipate problems before they occur. Real-time data integration is key to this. Systems such as flight operations, maintenance, and passenger services must be perfectly synchronized and exchange data seamlessly. We develop IT solutions that automate many of these processes – so our customers can focus on their business while still meeting all safety requirements.

Safety is not an option for us, but a basic requirement.

The AI Co-Validator is an innovative AI application that addresses precisely the issue of safety and real-time data. What is it all about, and what does the collaboration with Comply365 mean in this context?

Amir: Based on a specific customer situation, Lufthansa Industry Solutions has developed a proof of concept (PoC) to test the use of artificial intelligence for classifying safety-related incidents such as turbulence, technical defects, or communication and evaluation errors during flight operations. The aim was to improve data quality, comply with regulatory requirements, and significantly reduce the reporting workload for crew members. Following the successful completion of the project and the realization that the scenario could easily be transferred to other use cases, the decision was made to create a flexible SaaS solution: the AI Co-Validator.

Nevena: With SafetyManager365 we have developed a web-based and integrated quality, risk, and safety management system that supports aviation companies worldwide in their day-to-day business. In discussions with LHIND, it became clear that the AI Co-Validator could offer significant added value to SafetyManager365 users: By combining our expertise in flight safety and risk management with LHIND's expertise in IT consulting and system integration, it enables seamless interaction between the software that manages the reporting process and the AI in the background, which constantly generates better classifications and suggestions.

Theresa: Overall, human intervention is minimized without compromising reliability. This takes the pressure off crew and safety teams, allowing them to focus on their core tasks.

We are delighted to be pioneering this area together with Lufthansa Industry Solutions.

How does the AI Co-Validator work in practice?

Theresa: When a customer decides to activate the AI Co-Validator, the AI is trained using that customer's historical data. You could think of it as a new teammate that goes through training to understand the company's specific processes. The AI learns to recognize patterns and contextual clues from past reports in order to accurately evaluate new reports. Once active, the AI Co-Validator examines incoming reports, compares them with historical data, and suggests the most appropriate, customer-specific event classification. As soon as the classification suggested by the AI matches the reporter's selection or exceeds a predefined confidence threshold, the report is automatically approved.

Amir: The AI Co-Validator not only uses historical reports to accurately classify events, but also provides informed suggestions for risk assessment. Since these assessments can be safety-critical, the AI acts purely in a supporting role – the final decision always remains with humans. The underlying model ensures consistent, objective analysis and reduces potential subjective influences to a minimum.

Nevena: With 24/7 approval of incoming reports in the reporting module of the SafetyManager365, the AI Co-Validator ensures that important safety information will be forwarded consistently to the relevant departments not only during office hours, but around the clock. Thus, the tool reduces time-consuming repetitive and routine tasks. We are delighted to be pioneering this area together with Lufthansa Industry Solutions.
