Lünendonk® Study 2020

Lünendonk® Study 2020: Companies want to increase IT budget

The Lünendonk® study published today takes a look at the past business year and highlights current developments in the IT market. The focus of the companies is primarily on security.

Mindelheim/Norderstedt, September 22, 2020 – IT service providers in Germany were once again able to achieve a growth on average in 2019. This is the result of the Lünendonk® Study 2020 "The Market for IT Consulting and IT Services in Germany" which was published today. According to the study, however, business with IT services, with growth of 7.8 percent compared to 2018, developed less strongly than in previous years. The IT companies surveyed were still able to generate growth of 11.9 percent and 14.6 percent in business years 2018 and 2017 respectively (see Lünendonk® Study 2019 and Lünendonk® Study 2018). The authors of the study see the main reasons for this in uncertainty at the economic policy level, such as global trade conflicts or the Brexit, but also in structural change in the automotive industry.

According to the study, the consequences of the current corona pandemic are only partially foreseeable. At the time of the survey (February to April), many of the respondents did not feel able to give a definite assessment. However, the available results indicate a balanced picture: Although some projects had to be postponed or even cancelled, 90 percent of the IT service providers expect an increased demand in the cloud field in 2020 and 2021, for example when it comes to the relocation of On-Premise applications.

Companies invest in stable structures

The study participants also forecast constant demand at a high level for the modernization and adaptation of the IT landscape. The intention of users to invest in basic operations and existing systems in particular due to the economic uncertainty supports this forecast. Data security, IT solutions and IT processes are the top priorities for user companies. Almost two thirds of all users even want to increase their IT budget for this purpose.

"Many companies recognize, especially in the current situation, that appropriate digitization of processes gives more stability and flexibility to businesses. Both in times of crisis and beyond exceptional situations. Be it through collaboration tools, through a production linked via IoT or in digital exchange with partners within the supply chain," says Heiko Packwitz, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer of Lufthansa Industry Solutions, assessing the companies' intentions.

The Lünendonk® Study 2020 "The Market for IT Consulting and IT Services in Germany" contains current figures, data and analyses of the market for IT services. For the study, the market research company examined 76 IT service providers and interviewed their decision-makers as well as more than 200 IT managers from upper mid-sized companies, large corporations and groups. An essential part of the study is the Lünendonk® list of the top 25 IT consulting and system integration companies in Germany. According to this list, Lufthansa Industry Solutions is one of the leading IT consulting firms in Germany.
