New Use Case Series from LHIND

Every Minute Counts: Optimizing Inbound Logistics with Data-Driven Insights

Limited capacities, last-minute changes and increasing operational complexity pose significant challenges in logistics and supply chain management across industries. The second use case in Lufthansa Industry Solutions' new series demonstrates how data-driven optimization can support faster, more informed planning and resource decisions. While developed for airport gate and apron management, the approach can be applied to a wide range of planning and operational environments.

Norderstedt, August 24, 2026 – Delays, unexpected disruptions and rising traffic volumes are increasing the complexity of gate planning at airports. Even a single operational change can trigger extensive adjustments across multiple processes and resources. The second use case from Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND) illustrates how data-driven optimization can help address these challenges. In collaboration with an airport operator, LHIND developed a solution that automatically assigns gates and apron positions while considering operational constraints, available capacities and real-time disruptions.

Simulation results indicate potential for more efficient resource utilization, faster and more transparent decision-making, and reduced workload for operational teams. At the same time, the use case highlights how mathematical optimization and intelligent decision support can be applied to a broad range of planning scenarios, including logistics, transportation, infrastructure management and manufacturing operations.

Part Two of the Use Case Series

Through its five-part series on digital solutions for mobility, logistics and supply chains, LHIND demonstrates how modern technologies can help organizations address complex operational challenges.

The detailed use case, Every Minute Counts: Rethinking Inbound Logistics, explores the challenges of gate and apron management and shows how intelligent optimization methods can support complex planning and resource allocation decisions in dynamic operating environments.
