5 theses on AI in 2024

"Artificial intelligence will become the third arm of the human being"

The new generation of AI applications will permeate every aspect of our daily lives, both at work and at home. In five theses, the experts from Lufthansa Industry Solutions explain the changes we can expect in 2024 and how we can best prepare for them.

Norderstedt, Germany, January 09, 2024 - "ChatGPT has given a first impression of the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). But this is only the beginning. In the future, the possible applications will expand dramatically and enable new forms of human-machine interaction," says Max Pillong, Director AI & Data Analytics at Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND). In five AI theses, the digitalization experts at the IT service provider and consulting company explain how our professional and everyday lives will fundamentally change by 2024:

  1. AI will support and augment skills and competencies. It will enable people to push new boundaries in both their leisure and professional lives.
  2. New productivity gains will be achieved with the support of AI, as it is the ideal tool for making sense of the vast amounts of data generated by digitalization.
  3. AI is being driven into businesses and homes by global US corporations. But it is local service providers who will ensure legal certainty and accompany the introduction.
  4. AI will find its way into all areas of life. It must therefore not remain the domain of experts, but must be made accessible to the general public.
  5. AI rewards those with the courage to change: an open and responsible approach to the technology will foster creative solutions and help meet future challenges.

In the future, the possible applications will expand dramatically and enable new forms of human-machine interaction.

AI is neither a data thief nor a data thrower

"The era of experimentation is over. More and more applications are gradually being released and used," says Bernhard Kube, Vice President AI & Data Analytics at LHIND. This also shows that premature prejudices against the technology are untenable: "AI is neither a data thief nor a careless data thrower. But it should be used with caution and in accordance with security guidelines. Applications that operate in a closed data room are particularly suitable for sensitive business areas. The new AI regulation passed by the EU AI Act has not caught German companies unprepared. There are many areas in which the added value of AI can be realized quickly, securely and in compliance with the law.

Michael Koch, Director AI & Data Analytics at LHIND, advises against abandoning new AI technologies due to security concerns or fear of losing human autonomy: "Companies have amassed massive amounts of data. It slows people down in their day-to-day work because it is simply too big and too complex. In an era of skills shortages, having a single point of contact for expert knowledge is no longer enough. We need these new tools to generate direct answers instead of wasting valuable time searching and researching sources in a swamp of documents. The current search culture is going to change dramatically.

According to Lars Schwabe, Business Director Digital Strategy & IoT at LHIND, the coming years will be increasingly characterized by digital change and will influence the way we live and work more than ever before. The intelligent assistant or co-pilot will become an everyday tool: "There will be more and more connections between the digital and real worlds. AI will act as a central link in this network, increasingly taking over routine activities. It will become the third arm of the human being, so to speak. It is precisely because technology is becoming our constant companion that a comprehensive development of skills is necessary. In the future, we will need digitally literate users who are aware of and engaged with the topic of digitalization.
