New service: “AI as a Service” for medium-sized companies and corporations

Classic AI projects are complex and cost-intensive. For this reason, often only larger companies can implement them in individual areas. With its new service “AI as a Service” (AIaaS), Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND) is now giving medium-sized companies and smaller projects the chance to benefit from artificial intelligence.

Norderstedt, July 5, 2021 – With Artificial Intelligence as a Service, LHIND now offers companies of all sizes the opportunity to use artificial intelligence for process automation and acceleration via a programming interface directly from the cloud. The turnkey AI tools relieve companies of the time-consuming, tedious task of programming and training their own solution.

LHIND fine-tunes the pre-trained standard services to meet individual challenges and integrates them into customers' existing processes. Compared to in-house development, this results in cost reductions in the five-digit range. The software can be delivered quickly and is ready for immediate use, with the highest standards of information security, including GDPR compliance. LHIND takes over the complete operation per service level agreement (SLA).

The customer pays only for what they use: If they need the AI service only once a day, they will be charged only for this period. The costs thus prove to be manageable and can be planned. The product is also flexible in other respects: AIaaS can be scaled in any direction depending on the needs and growth of the company, without having to build up a team of experts and a complex infrastructure with high computing power and storage capacity on the customer side.

“The cost of new AI development is usually so high that it cannot be justified in business terms for many applications that actually make sense, and the necessary in-house expertise is lacking. Often, these types of projects also fail,” explains Dr. Susan Wegner, Vice President Artificial Intelligence & Data Analytics at Lufthansa Industry Solutions. “That's why we've leveraged our years of experience in real-world projects to standardize recurring AI tasks in natural language processing and computer vision. With our customers, we can now customize ready-made, cloud-based solutions in a matter of days to produce results quickly.”

Users can harness the full power of pre-trained AIs through simple programming interfaces and benefit from the new technology without having to write a single line of code. “Since we developed AIaaS not as a pure brainchild at a desk, but from real operational practice and are already using it, it is a proven solution,” Wegner explains. “However, not every company already has a clear awareness of the possibilities of artificial intelligence. We also want to help here by first showing what is feasible in the specific situation and where the limits are. The real power of the hype must now be brought to the streets.”

Lufthansa Industry Solutions has summarized all the information on its AI services in a white paper on the topic of “Artificial Intelligence as a Service (AIaaS)”. In addition, the white paper highlights the current state of AIaaS from the cloud and the benefits for business in discussions with three experts. Three practical case studies will also be used to illustrate how companies can save valuable working time and costs through the use of artificial intelligence.
