Lufthansa Industry Solutions Founds Blockchain Lab

Only a few companies have so far been able to see the potential of blockchain technology for their own business. Lufthansa Industry Solutions intends to change this with a special laboratory. From now on, this IT service provider based in Norderstedt near Hamburg will have an experimental room dedicated to the subject of blockchain. In its Blockchain Lab, the company will join with other experts and institutions to put the new technology and its many possible uses to the test.

Norderstedt, September 27, 2017 – Blockchain technology is currently the subject of intense discussion. This is because many possible applications are conceivable – from the secure tracking of valuable goods up to the verification of original parts. Hence it is all the more important to test the productive use of this new technology in order to learn about it and create a space for innovative process ideas. This is why Lufthansa Industry Solutions has set up the Blockchain Lab. From now on, the company will bundle the expertise of blockchain, industry, and design thinking experts, as well as developers and UX designers, here at its headquarters in Norderstedt.

“The Blockchain Lab is a place to develop, try out, and test new processes and possible applications involving blockchain technology. Here companies can take advantage of our expert help to spend time on specific issues and sound out the potential of blockchain for their own business success,” says Bernhard Kube, Vice President Technology Consultant at Lufthansa Industry Solutions. “A laboratory of this kind is the key to success when it comes to such complex topics.”

Developing the business models of the future together

The Blockchain Lab is part of Lufthansa Industry Solutions’ Digital Lab, the think tank for digital solutions. A variety of thematic fields are pooled under this roof: Blockchain Lab, IoT Lab, Mobile Lab, Data Insight Lab, Security Lab, cloud and natural language processing. They all have the same goal: to work together with companies to develop digitalization strategies, digital use cases, and the business models of the future. To this end, a team of experts from various fields is dynamically assembled as required to meet the needs of the specific company’s project. After all, in order for ideas, concepts, and prototypes for new digital products and online services to come into being, software developers, IT experts, engineers, and customer and department staff have to be able to get together in one place and exchange ideas.

Method of work

The basis for developing new ideas and approaches to solutions is a basic understanding of blockchain technology and its special features, which the experts at Lufthansa Industry Solutions teach in a blockchain training course. After the training, those attending from the departments understand the technical aspects of how blockchain functions and are able to identify and evaluate possible application scenarios. With the aid of a specially developed Blockchain Canvas, they can then work creatively together with Lufthansa Industry Solutions to generate digital strategies and innovations – beyond the boundaries of department, hierarchy, and company.

Blockchain Canvas

The Business Model Canvas is a well-known template for systematically generating business models. Lufthansa Industry Solutions has tailored and expanded this tool specifically for the evaluation of blockchain use cases. With the help of the Blockchain Canvas, use cases are conclusively tested and evaluated.

Then prototypes or “minimum viable products” are developed, taking account of IT security.
